India Names New Defense Chief as Military Overhaul Accelerates

India appointed retired general NS Raja Subramani as its next defense chief on Saturday as the country undertakes it biggest military reorganization in seven decades amid border tensions.

Subramani, whose career spans more than four decades, takes the role as India’s military is undergoing its biggest transformation since independence in 1947. He retired in 2024 as the army’s second-in-command and is currently the government’s military adviser.
