Modi’s Party Names Adhikari as West Bengal’s Chief Minister

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party named Suvendu Adhikari as West Bengal’s chief minister, even as its landslide election victory in the key eastern state has triggered debate over a controversial voter roll revision.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won 207 seats in the 294-member legislature, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress, or TMC, which was reduced to 80. Most exit polls predicted the BJP would oust the incumbent, but the surveys had pointed to a much closer contest.
