President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday announced a program to renegotiate household debt, his latest measure to support consumption as he seeks to bolster his popularity ahead of Brazil’s October election.

“Workers will be able to renegotiate debts from credit cards, overdraft accounts, revolving credit, personal loans,” and student loans known as FIES, Lula said in a televised speech ahead of the May 1 Labor Day holiday.
