Modi Seeks First Win in West Bengal With Polls in Last Phase

Millions of voters in India’s eastern state of West Bengal head to the polls on Wednesday in the final phase of a key local election, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks to win there for the first time.

The state, which shares a long border with Bangladesh, has seen an acrimonious contest between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, centered on changes to voter rolls. Known as the Special Intensive Revision, the exercise has overshadowed traditional campaign issues such as jobs and inflation.
