Kosovo lawmakers meet Tuesday in a last attempt to choose a new president before a midnight deadline that could trigger snap elections, with parties far apart on agreeing on a candidate and the opposition threatening to boycott the vote.

Over the past two years, Kosovo’s political landscape has been marked by repeated constitutional disputes and legal challenges at the top court. Legislators have been unable to agree on key issues, including on how to secure the 80 votes needed to elect a president.
