Romania’s former top ruling party will join the far-right opposition in a attempt to topple the prime minister, Ilie Bolojan, in the latest escalation of the political crisis that threatens to derail efforts to cut the European Union’s widest budget gap.

The Social Democrats and the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, the two biggest parties in parliament, could file a no-confidence motion against Bolojan’s minority government as early as Tuesday, AUR leader George Simion said. A vote could take place on May 5, he added.
