Mexico has moved to ease tensions over how private electricity generators will be able to do business in the country ahead of key North American trade talks next month.

The new rules governing power plants were a result of months of talks between the government and industry leaders, according to a person from the private sector with direct knowledge of the matter. The revised policy has generated cautious optimism that companies can now begin negotiating new contracts with the government and give more clarity for investment plans, said the person, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the talks.
