Norway’s government will take over the planning from local authorities for what is touted to be Europe’s largest documented occurrence of rare earth elements, vital for the electronic and defense industries.

The municipality of Nome in the Telemark region asked the state to take over the planning process of the Fens deposit due to a large potential for conflict over land use with various national considerations that must be weighed against each other, Industry Minister Cecilie Myrseth and Regional Development Minister Bjornar Skjaeran told reporters Wednesday.
