In Lebanon, phones vibrate in unison, no matter the backdrop.

Families displaced by war have set up tents and parked cars along Beirut’s waterfront. Just before sunset, as they brace themselves for the nighttime winds, their phones vibrate. In a city bar after 10 p.m., patrons allow themselves a brief respite; then they feel their phones vibrate. At the airport, a plane lands; as soon as passengers connect to the internet, their phones vibrate, too.
