Less than a month before Hungarians go to the polls for one of Europe’s most-anticipated elections, Prime Minister Viktor Orban is ditching carefully choreographed events for impassioned rallies in a bid to erase his party’s deficit in polls.

The five-term premier spoke on Monday in front of thousands of supporters in Kaposvar, a southwestern city which had for decades been a stronghold of his ruling Fidesz party. It’s now among the dozens of districts considered competitive as an opposition movement led by Peter Magyar continues to surge.
