Swiss Lawmakers Want to Keep Neutrality Flexible Amid Isolationist Push
Swiss lawmakers recommended that voters reject a proposal from right-wing groups to enshrine permanent neutrality in the constitution, a plan that would limit the country’s ability to impose economic sanctions.
After eight hours of debate, members of the lower house voted 128-60 against the so-called neutrality initiative, according to a release published Thursday. An isolationist group supported by the Swiss People’s Party had previously collected more than 100,000 signatures to hold a vote on the proposal.
