The UK said it won’t implement a treaty handing the Chagos Islands to Mauritius without the support of the US, likely extending its delay due to Donald Trump’s new-found opposition to the deal.

Britain struck the agreement with Mauritius in May, ceding sovereignty over the archipelago to the Indian Ocean nation, while retaining control through a lease of the island of Diego Garcia and its UK-US military base for 99 years. In doing so, the UK secured the Trump administration’s endorsement with Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling the agreement a “monumental achievement.”
