Malaysia’s leading civil society groups are urging the formation of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations surrounding abuse of power, unexplained wealth and regulatory extortion by the country’s anti-graft agency and its chief Azam Baki.

To restore public confidence, the formation of a royal commission or some other form of independent panel must be initiated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and be led by the former Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat or someone of similar stature, the groups said in a joint statement Friday.
