France’s Deficit-Cutting Plan Very Uncertain, Auditor Says

The auditor said future efforts to repair public finances must rely more on spending cuts and less on higher taxation that would weigh on competitiveness and hurt employment.

France’s strategy to reduce its budget deficit this year remains “very uncertain,” even after the government set less ambitious targets than initially planned, the country’s audit court said.

The French Parliament adopted a delayed budget earlier this month that aims to reduce the gap to 5% of economic output this year from 5.4% expected in 2025.
