Venezuela is experiencing a surge in protests as the socialist regime eases up on political repression following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by US forces.

There were 622 peaceful protests in January — an average of 21 per day — a 53% increase compared with the same month last year, the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict (OVCS) said in a report Thursday. Maduro was seized in a raid on Jan. 3 in which about 100 people died, including civilians.
