India approved $40 billion worth of arms, including six US maritime surveillance aircraft, 114 French fighter jets and missiles, according to people familiar with the matter.

A committee headed by Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh cleared the acquisition, one of the largest air power upgrades in recent years, on Thursday, according to a government statement that did not provide details on the number of weapons purchased.
