Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed Istanbul’s chief public prosecutor as the country’s justice minister early Wednesday, promoting a figure who has played a central role in investigating and jailing members of the main opposition party.

Akin Gurlek oversaw some of the most high-profile recent court cases in Turkey, including those against Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the opposition candidate for presidential elections expected by 2028.
