Zimbabwe to Amend Constitution to Extend President’s Tenure
Zimbabwe’s government proposed changing the constitution to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure until the end of the decade, effectively postponing elections for two years.
The bill would replace the current five-year terms for the president and parliament with seven-year terms, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere told reporters after a cabinet briefing in Harare on Tuesday. Mnangagwa’s current mandate is due to expire in 2028, when presidential elections are scheduled.
