Starmer Rival Burnham Says His Gilt Market Comments Were Misunderstood

Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester and potential leadership challenger to Keir Starmer, said his comments last year that Britain was “in hock” to the bond markets were taken out of context, and insisted his vision for the country would make it “a more investible proposition.”

Burnham set out his stall as a future leader of the UK’s governing Labour party last September but the plan backfired after he said “we’ve got to get beyond this thing of being in hock to the bond market” and revealed his project would require £40 billion ($54.6 billion) of extra borrowing.
