US Stocks Advance as Traders Look Beyond New Washington Risks
US stocks rose as traders weighed a combination of fresh trade and policy risks against a strong start to fourth-quarter earnings.
The S&P 500 Index rose 0.501%, led by communication services and technology stocks, to close 50 points away from the psychologically important 7,000 level. Mining firms Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and Newmont Corp. advanced 1.3% each as precious metal prices surged. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index rose 0.4%, while the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.639%.
