China is investigating its No. 1 general and Politburo member Zhang Youxia, a shocking move targeting a one-time ally of President Xi Jinping that leaves the nation’s apex military body with just two people.

The Defense Ministry announced Saturday that Zhang, vice military chair of the Communist Party’s Central Military Commission since 2017, was being probed under suspicion of “serious discipline and law violations.” Liu Zhenli, a member of the commission, is also being investigated, according to the two-sentence statement.
