Financial markets were kicked into high-gear this week by President Donald Trump’s unorthodox approach to geopolitics and old-school electioneering in Japan.

Trump threatened to launch a new trade war against European allies over his demand that Denmark cede control of Greenland to the US, only to quickly back down. In Japan, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi helped roil markets with an election pitch to cut taxes despite the country’s sizable debt burden and elevated inflation.
