What My Big Night Out Watching Kneecap Told Me About Ireland

The outspoken rap group’s Irish-language lyrics are energizing an entire generation born after the Troubles.

In a sold-out Dublin arena, thousands of Kneecap fans are chanting Irish-language rap lyrics about drug-fueled nights out, anti-establishment anger and national identity. The crowd is a sea of green, white and orange balaclavas — made famous by the band’s DJ, Próvaí — alongside Irish tricolors and Palestinian flags.

It’s a mid-December night shortly before Christmas, and this is my first Kneecap gig. On one level it’s simply a wild night out, powered by sharp lyrics, pounding beats and youthful abandon. On another, it offers a window into a changing Ireland.
