TSX Clears 33,000 For First Time as Tech Names Rise

The S&P/TSX Composite Index surpassed 33,000 for the first time on Thursday. The broad benchmark for Canadian stocks gained 0.3% to close at a record 33,029, powered by gains in tech and industrials shares.

The index is up 4.2% to start 2026, outpacing the S&P 500, which has climbed 1.2%. Top performers in the Canadian stocks gauge over the past 12 months are Discovery Silver Corp., which leaped about 830%, and gold exploration company Aris Mining Corp., which jumped by more than 350%. Both have benefited from the surge in gold and silver prices as investors seek haven assets.
