Malawi’s Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha said he is optimistic debt-restructuring talks with multilateral and bilateral creditors will conclude by February, ahead of the 2026-27 budget presentation.

Public debt continues to weigh on the country, jumping by 800 billion kwacha ($460 million) as of September to 22.4 trillion kwacha, though the government has intensified negotiations with its creditors, he said at a pre-budget consultative meeting in Blantyre on Wednesday. “We are committed to restoring public-debt sustainability and creating fiscal space for development expenditure.”
