German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said he is optimistic Europe can reach a “compromise” with the US over Greenland, as diplomats try to defuse tensions following US President Donald Trump’s fresh threats to seize the vast island.

Wadephul, who met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Monday, said he’s hopeful the US will participate in a new North Atlantic Treaty Organization mission in the Arctic to help ensure Greenland’s security.
