Khaleda Zia, a Force for Democracy in Bangladesh, Dies at 80
Khaleda Zia, the former prime minister of Bangladesh who helped usher in democracy after a tumultuous period of military rule and who dominated the country’s politics for decades, has died. She was 80.
Khaleda died at 6 a.m. local time on Tuesday in Dhaka, just after morning prayers, her Bangladesh Nationalist Party said in a statement. She had been suffering from a chest infection that had affected her heart and lungs, the party said last month.
