A federal appeals court will allow President Donald Trump to keep National Guard troops in Washington in the coming months, finding the administration had shown that it has a strong chance of winning a legal fight over the deployment.

The 3-0 order on Wednesday from the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit pauses a federal judge’s ruling that Trump had unlawfully sent more than 2,000 troops into the nation’s capital. It’s a boost to the president’s effort to mobilize the military in cities led by Democrats while the US Supreme Court considers a separate dispute over his use of troops in Chicago.
