Tencent Appoints Former OpenAI Researcher Its Chief AI Scientist

Photographer: Qilai Shen/BloombergTencent Holdings Ltd. has appointed Yao Shunyu as its chief AI scientist, entrusting the former OpenAI researcher with heading up its artificial intelligence efforts.
Yao, who joined Tencent this summer, will report directly to President Martin Lau in his new role and also lead Tencent’s newly formed AI Infrastructure Department, according to an internal company memo. That new division has been established under the company’s Technology Engineering Group, which is primarily responsible for research and development efforts.
