Resident doctors in England voted to proceed with a pre-Christmas strike after overwhelmingly rejecting a government offer that fell short of their demands on pay and conditions.

The medics — formerly known as junior doctors — voted by a margin of 83% to 17% to proceed with the planned walkout for five days starting Wednesday at 7 a.m., their union, the British Medical Association, said Monday in a statement. Turnout was 65%.
