What to Know About Australia’s Gun Laws in the Wake of Bondi Attack

The strict firearms laws Australia instituted three decades ago have been cited as a model for effective gun control. Provoked by a mass shooting in 1996, they’ve been credited with making such episodes a rarity in the country.

Now, the government has vowed to tighten gun controls even further after the worst such episode in the country since then: the murder of at least 15 people by two gunmen who opened fire on a crowd that had gathered at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Dec. 14 to mark the first night of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.
