Tsunami Advisory Issued After M6.7 Quake Hits Near Aomori, Japan
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Japan’s northern Aomori prefecture on Friday morning local time, days after a significant tremor hit the same region.
Shaking intensity reached a maximum 4 on a scale of 7, weaker than the tremor recorded Monday night. A tsunami advisory, the lowest level of alert, was issued for four prefectures including Aomori and Hokkaido, according to national broadcaster NHK. Waves of up to 1 meter (about 3 feet) may occur sometime after midday.
