Australia’s gig economy and casual-work footprint has shrunk to its smallest in at least a decade, suggesting a rebalancing in the labor market and highlighting the difficulty in gauging its overall tightness.

The share of employees in casual work dropped to 19% — the lowest level since at least 2014 — from a high of 23% in 2016, government data showed Friday. After easing during Covid, it climbed to 22% in 2022 before falling thereafter.
