Extreme Weather Plunges Brazil’s Largest City Into Darkness
A worsening drought and strong winds across São Paulo are straining the country’s power supply, blacking out hundreds of thousands of Brazilian households and slowing commerce in South America’s largest economy.
As of Thursday, about 1.3 million utility clients still lacked electricity in the metropolitan region of São Paulo and its eponymous capital after a storm with winds as strong as 61 miles (98 kilometers) per hour knocked down trees and damaged power lines.
