Huawei Technologies Co. and manufacturing partner Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. are making advances in chip production technology despite US attempts to limit their progress, according to analysis of a new phone’s components by research firm TechInsights.

The Kirin 9030 processor — part of Huawei’s Mate 80 Pro Max smartphone — was produced using an evolved version of SMIC’s technology, according to a report published Thursday. The component represents “China’s most advanced domestic semiconductor manufacturing to date,” TechInsights said.
