Giorgia Meloni’s deputies are increasingly divided over whether Italy should continue sending aid to Ukraine as European leaders scramble to shore up financial and military support for Kyiv.

On Thursday, the League, a coalition party, said the billions in Russian assets that were frozen in the European Union after Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine should be returned to Moscow. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani dismissed the statement, saying Italy’s foreign policy was for him and Meloni to decide. “The line is set by the prime minister and I share her view,” he said.
