South Korean Leader Touts Deal on Subs He Wants To Build At Home

Six months into his term as South Korea’s president, Lee Jae Myung floated a review of joint military drills with the US to spur dialogue with Pyongyang, while touting Washington’s green light on Seoul building nuclear-powered submarines as one of his top achievements.

South Korea has long wanted to join the small group of countries that build and operate nuclear-powered subs, in part as a deterrent against its nuclear-armed neighbor to the north. US President Donald Trump in October signed off on the plan — and later suggested the coveted military assets should be built in America.
