A leading Iranian rights activist and Nobel laureate said state suppression in the Islamic Republic is getting worse as the country faces multiple crises, including regional isolation and a deteriorating economy.

Narges Mohammadi, who won the Nobel peace prize in 2023 while serving a sentence in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, said activists, teachers and academics are increasingly being targeted by the state, which is using the death penalty as a “tool of repression.”
