Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi set off a diplomatic firestorm with China in November when she speculated over the potential for military action in relation to Taiwan.

She appeared to be outlining hypothetical security contingencies in response to questions in parliament. The Chinese government saw the comments as crossing a red line, and responded with economic and diplomatic reprisals.
