Germany Should Abolish Natural Gas Storage Targets, Study Says

Germany should scrap its legally binding gas-storage targets and pivot to a more market-driven system — possibly backed by a strategic emergency reserve — a government-commissioned study said.

While the storage requirements served a useful purpose during the energy crisis, they are counterproductive under more stable supply conditions, the study by Frontier Economics concluded. Getting rid of the mandates would restore market signals and support efficient stockpiling, while launching a strategic reserve could offer additional resilience, it said.
