Uber Robotaxi Partner WeRide Goes Driverless on Abu Dhabi Island
A year after launching with safety operators on board, the two will offer driverless rides in a 12-square-mile area.
WeRide and Uber are beginning to offer driverless rides in parts of Abu Dhabi.
Uber Technologies Inc. will begin offering driverless trips in WeRide Inc. vehicles around parts of Abu Dhabi, a milestone after the companies first launched a ride service with safety operators behind the wheel almost a year ago.
Riders who request an UberX or Uber Comfort may be matched with a driverless car at select locations throughout the 12 square miles of Yas Island, the companies said in a statement Wednesday. Customers who choose the Uber app’s new “Autonomous” ride type — which costs about the same as Uber Comfort — can increase their chances of getting matched with a robotaxi.
