The mayor of Washington, DC, Muriel Bowser, will not seek re-election in 2026, after leading the nation’s capital for a decade.

In an announcement posted Tuesday to X, Bowser called her three-term career “the honor of my life” and rattled off a list of achievements made since she became mayor in 2015. “Now looking to the future, I know we’ve laid the groundwork for others to build upon,” she said, “to reshape and grow DC’s economy, establish DC as the 51st state, and protect our investments in affordable housing, transportation, public safety and public schools — and to build a world-class stadium.”
