Wicked: For Good, the second film in a two-part series based on the hit Broadway musical, collected $147 million in ticket sales in its first weekend in US cinemas, a welcome hit for theaters after a dry spell the past couple months.

The new picture from Comcast Corp.’s Universal Pictures scored the second-best opening weekend sales of the year after the April release A Minecraft Movie from Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.’s film studio. It was Universal’s best opening in a decade. Industry tracker Boxoffice Pro had forecast sales of at least $145 million.
