Robert Fico’s populist Slovak government was hit by a legal warning from the European Union over a constitutional amendment on issues such as same-sex marriage that challenges the primacy of the bloc’s own laws.

Slovakia’s change asserts that national legislation takes precedence on matters of “national identity,” which Fico argues is meant to shield the country from “progressive nonsense.”
