OpenAI Foundation Tripled Giving in 2024 With Assets Set to Soar

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence startup whose recent restructuring created one of the world’s biggest philanthropic foundations, gave away $7.5 million through its nonprofit in 2024, most of which went to AI safety research.

The OpenAI Foundation’s single largest gift was $1 million to the Meridian Institute’s AI Safety Fund, its latest tax filing shows. In May, the institute announced it was disbanding and laying off its staff, according to a post on its website. OpenAI also funded research grants at more than a dozen universities.
