Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva nominated his government’s top lawyer, a prominent evangelical Christian, to join the Supreme Court in a nod to the fast-growing religious and political constituency.

Lula, as the leftist leader is known, nominated Attorney General Jorge Messias to serve on the South American country’s top court, according to a statement on Thursday. A close Lula ally, Messias is one of the few progressive evangelical Christian voices in the country.
