Harald Mahrer, president of the Austrian Federal Economic Chambers and one of the nation’s most influential public figures, quit his central-bank post after an outcry over salaries at his business lobby.

Mahrer will give up his job as president of the Austrian National Bank’s General Council to fully focus on the chamber of commerce, also known as WKO, he told reporters Monday.
