Canada Loses Measles-Free Status With Outbreak Passing One-Year Mark
Canada has lost its claim to having measles under control.
The World Health Organization retracted the country’s status as having eliminated measles after thousands of people contracted the virus that causes fever, rash and potentially life-threatening complications since October 2024, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. While the outbreak is showing signs of slowing, it continues to spread primarily in under-vaccinated communities, the agency said.
