Philippine disaster agencies and local government units started preparing for the arrival of Typhoon Fung-Wong, with the pre-emptive evacuation of residents from vulnerable areas and the storing of equipment and relief supplies.

Fung-Wong — known locally as Uwan — has gained strength and its maximum sustained winds have increased to 140 kilometers (87 miles) per hour, with gusts of up to 170 kph. It is expected to make landfall on the main Luzon island on Sunday evening.
