Tanzania charged scores of people with treason for their alleged involvement in deadly protests that erupted after the east African nation’s contentious elections last week.

Court documents seen by Bloomberg showed the suspects were arraigned at a court in Dar es Salaam, the commercial hub, on Friday. One list of those facing prosecution contained 76 names, and a second a further 22. They were all jointly charged on two counts — conspiracy to commit treason and treason.
